First, about the exit signs in Gotham, there's Aparo Expressway which you knew, and Sheldon Park. That must be an homage to Sheldon Moldoff, long-time Batman artist in the 50s and 60s. If you google his art, I bet you'll recognize the style. (It also heavily influenced the cartoon series Batman: The Brave and the Bold.)
ReplyDeleteNow, about this series. Hmm, I don't like being nega-Tim, but I'm seeing so many of the same beats and characters that Jeph Loeb has done before. First in The Long Halloween (TLH). We've got Catwoman as love interest, Joker, Poison Ivy, Riddler, and some substitutes like Croc for Solomon Grundy. But the step too far is Two-Face, a huge part of TLH, being revealed as Hush. That makes it start to feel like a retread because Harvey was a big antagonist in TBH. He also did it in Dark Victory, the direct sequel to TBH, so that was more understandable. But this story doesn't directly follow either of those series, so it's starting to bug me.
Which I'm conflicted about, because I do like how he's handling Batman/Bruce, Catwoman/Selina, and in this issue, Nightwing/Dick. It's very entertaining. But I just can't unsee the parallel, and it's not my fault when Loeb threw in Dent's line to the Joker, "You broke into my home one Christmas", a direct reference to TLH. Sigh.
Anyway, I'm definitely enjoying the podcast, and looking forward to more. Maybe I'll turn back into posi-Tim. Thanks, gang!
This series really is a tour and celebration of the Batman and DC mythos. Everyone from Superman to Huntress is showing up and it seems intentional. I’ve read Batman arcs before and they weren’t so character-packed. Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteThink of this: all these characters have been represented in live action movies. Croc, Poison Ivy, Nightwing from Titans, Ras and Talia al Ghul. So this arc could be handed to a non-reader and they would be able to follow.
Also, from the first 1/4 of the book, I got an Arkham Knight game vibe - with them jumping in the Batmobile and jetting over the gotham streets. Those are literally actions the player can do in the video game. That may be more of a testament to the games since Hush (2002) pre-dates the series of games (2009).
